US Army: Reports and compiled documents
Scope and content
The folder contains various reports and documents composed and/or compiled by the US Army, which date back to the time after the liberation of KL Flossenbürg. Included are reports by the Komitee ehemaliger politischer Gefangener (Hamburg) (Committe of former Political Prisoners, Hamburg), the Ligue Luxembourgeoise des Prisonniers et Déportés Politiques as well as by a French and a Dutch liaison officer. Prominent topics are, firstly, the structure of the camp, conditions regarding forced labor and the life of the prisoners, the SS and the death marches, as well as, secondly, discussions pertaining to the organization of the liberated camp.
Contains:
I) Three reports by the 90. Infantry division, by US-major Samuel Gray and by the French liaison office Major J. Blum, dated between 24.04.1945 and 06.05.1945. Subject: Conditions in Flossenbürg during Nazi era (number of prisoners, category of imprisonment and nationality, detention conditions, supplies of food, forced labor, deportations, names of perpetrators, names of capos) and in the months after 24.04.1945 (fettle of the liberated survivors, accommodation, hygiene, medical care and providing food / clothing, repatriation, burial of corpses, strategic plans to organize the liberated camp). II) Report by the Dutch liaison officer A.H.M. van Banning addressed to the director of the Central Tracing Bureau on Sept 24, 1946 regarding the organization and the commandos of the camp, consisting of two lists, compiled by the Netherlands Government Institute for War-Documents, Concentration Camps Research Department: „Organisatorischer Aufbau des Konzentrationslagers Flossenbürg/Oberpfalz“ (4 pages) contains names, functions, actions and in parts current residencies of former staff of the KL and the Messerschmidt factories; names and actions of eight as "Berufsverbrecher" (“career criminals”) interned males; contacts of potential witnesses (male). The report „Die Außenkommandos des Konzentrationslagers Flossenbürg“ includes the number of forced laborers (Effective: 13.04.1945), based on statements given by the Committe of former Political Prisoners (Hamburg), 23.08.1946. III) Two reports by the War Crimes Branch of the Headquarters Third United States Army (Judge Advocate Section) directed to the Commanding General, Third United States Army, drafted in the context of Investigation of War Crimes between 25.04.-02.05.1945 and 13.05.-25.05.1945, based on statements of witnesses about KL Flossenbürg. IV) List of sub-camps (Effective: 13.04.1945), compiled by the Committe of Former Political Prisoners (Hamburg), includes number of prisoners (female / male) and names of commando leaders, 17.05.1945. German/Latin, Doc ID: 82107204.
V) Addenda to the reports regarding Flossenbürg Camp:
- 5 pages, concerning the multiple allocation of prisoner numbers; deportations to other camps between January and April 1945; eviction of Flossenbürg and several subcamps; death march towards Dachau; maltreatment by the SS and executions; situation of political prisoners in March 1945.
