Scope and content
The archival unit mainly consists of lists of former persecutees, predominantly persons of Jewish descent. State institutions and aid organizations, particularly the World Jewish Congress, registered these persons following their liberation, inasmuch as their place of stay was controlled by the Allied Forces, to allow a central search for their whereabouts through the International Tracing Service or its predecessor organization. Registration occurred on site in various European localities and, if needed, worldwide through the 1950s. For some individuals, this occurred multiple times over the course of transports and waves of migration. Member lists by various Jewish communities within and out of Germany indicate the, at least temporary, place of stay for the concerned persons after their repatriation. Additionally, the inventory includes search lists, that is, lists of individuals who had gone missing from groups of persons, which were sent to the ITS and others from the above-mentioned organizations. In a few rare cases, the deaths of individuals belonging to the group of persons concerned were noted in lists of these holdings.
