History of Concentration Camp Sachsenburg 1933-1937:
Concentration Camp Sachsenburg was established already in early May 1933 on the premises of a former textile mill in Sachsenburg. The first 40 prisoners, who were deported from CC Plauen to Sachsenburg, as well as 50 to 60 other prisoners from the Chemnitz penitentiaries, were initially placed in the Sachsenburg castle, as the factory building intended for them was lacking in the necessary facilities. Until 1935, they were guarded by SA personnel. Later , this task was done by SS-units The first prisoners of CC Sachsenburg were tasked with reconstructing the factory building for 1,500 to 2,000 CC inmates. All in all several thousand prisoners were held in Sachsenhausen, and who, from 1933 until 1937, under inhumane conditions, had to do exhausting, degrading labor in the nearby stone quarry and in constructing moat reinforcements. Furthermore, they were defenseless against the harassment by the guard units, and which rapidly worsened with the change from SA to SS. CC Sachsenburg existed until 9 July 1937, when most of the prisoners were transferred to Concentration Camps Sachsenhausen and Buchenwald.
